I did not follow the recipe exactly. I substitued 1/2 crisco and 1/2 butter. I also used vanilla excerpt instead of Almond. I am non much of an almond fan, but the icing was slap-up. Not as sweet as others I accept used and alot simpler.

This is a pretty, pure white frosting and very easy to work with. Sparse it for a crumb coat, leave as is for pipage, and sparse, if you prefer, to frost. The texture is great equally well - creamy and fluffy. But it was prettier to expect at than it was to consume. I believe it is a combination of factors that made this non as skilful for flavor -the fact that it was all shortening made the taste flat. Maybe a pinch of salt would have helped that. The almond flavoring, while it keeps the frosting white, is harsh. I miss the buttery, vanilla flavor of other frosting recipes I've tried which are far ameliorate. This was one occasion where I pushed most of the frosting off to the side of my plate...

This is the decorating frosting recipe that I learned when I first started decorating cakes. I like the almond flavoring but you tin also use butter flavoring if you prefer the butter flavor. Really butter can be used rather than the shortning but then you volition not have a true white frosting that decorators want. I have also substituted any number of flavorings depending on what I wanted although almond is my personal favorite. Yous have to recollect this is made for DECORATING, more so than the actual flavour.

I'grand a very serious, though non-professional, block decorator. I bake and decorate a cake every two weeks, and even made my ain wedding ceremony cake. First, I have to say, this icing DOES have its place: Information technology'south very easy to make, cheap, and kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator, it says expert virtually forever. I use this for practise all the fourth dimension, but I *never* swallow it. The gustation is vile. Information technology's greasy, and most people, myself included, find it way too sugary. At that place is no reason to serve this to people given there are actually tasty icing recipes out there that are still appropriate to decorate with. If you are coloring the frosting, a traditional buttercream is wonderful. If you must have pure white: marshmallow fondant is good for icing an unabridged cake, and boiled icing is great for writing and string work. If you need white flowers, mucilage paste can do the trick. If you absolutely must accept *pure white piped flowers* and in that location is no fashion effectually information technology, I'd check gourmet stores or online to detect some goat milk butter, which is pure white if it isn't dyed.

I made this today to decorate a birthday cake and I am very pleased with the results. This is teriffic for making flowers, borders, and writing on cakes. I separated it into 3 bowls and added a different food coloring to each one...I made pink and yellow for flowers and greenish for leaves. This should be a thick frosting in society to pipe it out of the unlike decorating tips. I would not sparse it down to frost an entire cake...it's very sweet in large amounts!

The standard decorator frosting that most home block decorators begin with. Absolutely, it's lovely to expect at and pipes like a dream. However, the taste leaves a lot to be desired. When using only shortening, information technology's essential to add together some table salt to the mix - only a petty will suffice, under i/8 tsp - or the flavor will exist dull, like it'south missing something. That much almond extract will exist besides stiff for those who don't absolutely beloved almond flavor, and at that place are many. Either one-half almond and one-half vanilla (articulate, if you desire to preserve that stark white colour) or half vanilla and one-half lemon are more by and large appealing possibilities. Thin to employ as a frosting for the unabridged cake, only know ahead of time that this recipe might well exist considered besides sweet. For me, this isn't the overall taste I'thou looking for. A frosting made with all or mostly shortening doesn't melt on the tongue the way I like. This frosting leaves a tell-tale gummy, cloyingly sweet residue. This frosting is better when reserved strictly for decorating. When used for this purpose, I find that cutting the ingredients in half gives me enough to decorate a 2-layer or 9" Ten 13" cake. Exist aware that this volition develop a lite chaff when left exposed to the air for several hours.

I used this frosting to brand a wedding block that I entered in a dessert competition at my schoolhouse, and I won. :) It tasted good, and it worked nicely to cover the block and also to make borders and decorations. I used 1/2 cup butter and i/2 cup shortening instead of 1 whole cup of shortening. Likewise, I think 1 i/2 tsp of almond ex. was also much, and I reduced it to 1 tsp in the 2d batch. Thank you for this recipe! :D
01/11/2008
This was exactly what I wanted it to be. I doubled the recipe and used half Crisco, half butter, and left out the almond excerpt (since I ran out). I used information technology to ice and build a princess castle and it was declared the all-time altogether cake that everyone e'er saw! The season was really good also, unlike most bakery cakes anymore. Give thanks you so much, I'll use this one a lot for decorating.
06/xix/2007
I loved this frosting! I have used it several times now. Information technology tastes awesome, simple to make and is good to frost cakes and cupcakes. I've used different variations - like used vanilla extract and lemon extract instead of almond. It was crawly! I used butter instead of shortening and it still turned out very white. Thank you!!

Fabulous icing for block decorating! My daughter was decorating a cake for her 4H project to enter in our county fair. We needed a really good icing that handled well for frosting the cake and doing borders, flowers etc. This was the best one we tried. Thanks!
05/ten/2010
I vary the recipe a chip, but as a cake decorator this is my go-to frosting recipe. I substitute h2o for the milk and vanilla extract for the almond excerpt. The vanilla extract is just a taste preference, and I sub the water for milk because with busy/celebration cakes they are often left at room temp. to be displayed so I would rather just worry about there existence even a niggling chip of dairy, which should be refrigerated. I first cream together my shortening and liquid ingredients until well combined and shine before adding the confectioners carbohydrate, which I add gradually - one cup at a time. Once I have all the confectioners sugar added I check the consistency and add more than water if necessary.
10/10/2010
Proficient frosting! I needed it for my Wiltons decorating form... This is the same recipe they gave us minus the optional meringue powder and table salt. Also a tip from my decorating teacher is to employ water instead of milk and so yous can go out your frosting out.
01/02/2009
This frosting is WONDERFUL and PERFECT for decorating!!!!!
eleven/sixteen/2006
This is the all-time frosting I have ever made. I plan to apply this many many more than times! It'southward easy to make, tastes wonderful, and you tin can flavor it with anything! And information technology'due south perfect for decorating, like it should exist. I had made a Mount Dew Cake for my boyfriend for his birthday, and wanted a different frosting than the one provided (he doesn't like coconut). I used this for both frosting AND decorating. Instead of using almond extract I used lemon extract and then it would blend improve with the season of the cake. It turned out wonderful!
12/25/2010
People need to read the recipe title before rating. This is a DECORATOR Frosting and not necessarily ane to grade as flavor. We utilize this consistently to decorate and equally a nibble coat. I employ a buttercream to frost the block and make full betwixt the layers. Thus, I employ 2 different kinds of frosting for my fancy cakes and cupcakes. I have used this recipe for years. It is exactly as the championship stated - Decorator Icing and fabulous at that.
01/15/2009
This is my new favorite icing! I fell in love w/a buttercream recipe from here, just I feel guilty serving it to people considering of the raw eggs. I was searching for a WHITE frosting to make to decorate a cake and plant this recipe and male child am I glad I did! I used clear vanilla extract instead of almond (fit my cake'south flavor palate better) and it was white white! It tasted keen and held upward well for piping! I added more than vanilla, so I also needed to add some more 10X sugar to go the right consistency. Thank You for my new go to *butter*foam recipe!!!!
06/fourteen/2000
it is an boilerplate decorating frosting
10/13/2010
Made this over again today! (I take a ton of cupcakes in my time to come) and to the mix I added 2 tbs of cocoa, and in place of the warm water I used warm java. PERFECTION. Super awesome chocolate frosting. My half-dozen twelvemonth old and my ane year former licked the beaters and were COATED in it. Happy times! (Till bathtime, now my tub is coated in information technology!)
eleven/07/2010
This is an fantabulous frosting. I've been making a like one for years. But unremarkably utilise clear vanilla extract or butter flavoring. I like the almond flavor in this 1. But I feel you could apply whatever unlike extract yous wish to flavor per cake or cupcakes y'all desire. I've even used Rum extract....and it's lip smacking. But this is a winner.
eleven/09/2010
i have been looking for a recipe for a frosting like this for ages. i brand alot of cupcakes n wanted 1 that would stay firm n keep good shape and so when i institute this i thought my luck was in. i tryed it only used half butter one-half crisco. it piped perfect n looked gr8 but god the taste made me feel sick. and so actually this frosting is for looks due north not for taste .
05/29/2009
This is the Wilton buttercreme frosting recipe and volition work everytime. I too add a 'compression' of common salt to cut down on the sweet. I use 1/2 cup butter and i/2 cup shortning (without Transfat!). The transfat will break downward the frosting. A annotation on this: this is a crusting frosting which means it will somewhat harden afterwards sitting, which is perfect for decorators as it smooths out and stays. Other flavors tin can be added in place of the almond for complimenting the cake.
09/25/2010
I realy did not know that they had a recipie for this ! I've been making information technology for years! ( 35 ) . And have had people inquire me how i fabricated it . !
09/25/2010
I made this with all crisco baking shortening butter flavor. I trounce shortening with heavy cream to replace milk, vanilla (instead of almond)excerpt and added dash of sea salt like others suggested. Then I blended in the carbohydrate until it was calorie-free and fluffy. One-half I used equally is and the other half was mixed with i/2 cup cocoa powder and it made a great light chocolate frosting. I did need to add a little more than cream and didn't even mensurate the powder sugar, but used what was needed for right consistancy. Great basic recipe Jean.
01/11/2011
I've used this recipe about 10 times now and it'due south a house favorite! It's very versatile and can be used as is, colored, thinned, etc. A real keeper!
06/xvi/2009
I broil all the fourth dimension, and brand frosting all the fourth dimension. Fifty-fifty though this is really white, and will never go bad in the fridge, that's nigh all it'due south expert points. The taste of this frosting is awful, and I loathe the thought of feeding pure shortening and sugar to anyone!! I make buttercream reguarly and achieve a very white frosting by using land o lakes butter, and whipping information technology a tiny scrap. It's pipeable, tasty and white.
eleven/03/2011
I give this only for stars considering information technology calls for shortening. I don't eat or use hydrogenated oils and then I replaced it with butter. I believe this got rid of the blandness others wrote about. It was good with vanilla and with almond flavoring. As it is called "decorator frosting" that is what I made it for. Less milk and it is prissy and stiff. The corporeality it calls for made the perfect spreading consistancy. With butter the gustation and consistancy were perfect. I will use this time and fourth dimension once more!
07/12/2000
Yes this frosting is white, simply that'southward about it. The taste is boilerplate...very sweetness and leaves a moving picture in your mouth afterwards. I frosted a white cake with this and ended up having to throw it away because my family unit disliked the frosting. Pitiful. This recipe did have potential though.
ten/30/2001
Im deplorable to say this frosting was not very good. You could realy gustatory modality the shortening.
04/19/2011
This is real close to the recipe I learned for decorating cakes except I utilize a full 2 lb bag confectioner's sugar to the 1 c shortening. Instead of milk I use one/2 c water and 1 tsp of flavoring rather its vanilla, almond, butter etc. You can utilize more water to thin down for frosting the cake but it pipes and sets like a charm. People come up to me for the "budget cakes" this is what i utilise. I likewise add upwardly to 1/2 tsp salt this volition take out the overly sweet taste.
03/16/2011
I followed the recipe exactly, with the post-obit additions: 1/4 tsp salt, ane/2 tsp butter extract. The extract didn't change the color; it was nonetheless pure white. Personally I liked the almond flavoring -- but I *really* love almond extract. I establish this to be of an splendid texture, and like all shortening-based frostings, of superior consistency for pipe. This did not brand quite enough for 24 heavily piped cupcakes, but did make enough to pipage 27 adequately. (Using skim milk and covering 27 as, this recipe has 138 calories per serving.) If spreading, y'all could probably get 36-40 out of information technology. Thanks for sharing!
04/16/2011
A very greasy gustatory modality...no one in the house liked it...used it on my son'southward kickoff birthday cake and he wouldn't even eat it...my communication find another recipe!!!!
02/12/2009
Tasted like Crisco. This is regular frosting nothing special better off with store bought.
10/13/2010
Very adept! I didn't modify a thing and it was perfect.
03/xxx/2013
A proficient basic decorator's frosting. I replaced the almond extract with another flavor. When y'all want pure white this volition get it.
05/xiii/2008
This frosting is OK for decorating, but not great for frosting the whole cake. I added a pinch of common salt to tone downwardly the sweetness.
08/01/2010
Used 1/two butter, ane/two shortening. Turned out excellent.
05/11/2011
I made this for my daughters birthday cupcake block and everyone loved the almond flavor. Information technology was a big hit. The frosting travels well even in heat.
09/11/2010
Excellent!!...I used 1/ii butter and 1/ii shortening!!!...Beginning time to decorate cupcakes with pastry bag & tip...Volition never water ice westward/ knife again!
07/31/2011
Worked perfect for decorating my cookies! I had to thin it with a footling more than milk in total I think I used about 2 tsp. more. Thank you for a solid recipe!
05/14/2013
This recipe is great and super piece of cake and I loved its consistency! I used butter instead of shortening and added more milk. Put vanilla extract with the almond because it wasn't potent enough and colored it with very soft pink and heaven blue and made beautiful cupcakes, thank you lot :)
08/28/2011
Most decorator frostings accept too much of a sugary taste to it and this i tastes great! I made it substituting the almond extract for vanilla excerpt and information technology was very tasty and was great for pipage designs on cakes.
03/xx/2011
This was WAY as well much Shortening, fabricated for a very greasy icing.
01/31/2011
I love this frosting. It ever turns out and is never runny and no having to buy expensive whipping cream that goes old in the refrigerator. Doesn't taste too sugary sweet and plenty fluffy, yet it holds information technology'southward shape. Thanks for the recipe!
05/twenty/2012
This had to much Almond extract
05/29/2009
A good "old faithful" recipe. If you are leaving the cake on the counter, I used water instead of milk. i/2 butter, 1/two crisco works best, with a loftier quality butter, it takes away the crisco gustation. The best style to thin it for apartment icing is white corn syrup.
07/07/2010
I used this frosting to practice some cake decorating techninque. I would probably requite information technology five stars for the purpose - decorating...but maybe 3 stars for gustation.
07/04/2009
I beloved this frosting!! I didn't take whatever almond extract and so I used vanilla. I only made 1/2 of this frosting b/c I merely needed information technology for the middle of my Patriotic poke cake. I didn't have quite enough frosting so I added a little cream cheese to extend it.Information technology was DELISH!! Next time I will try it with the almond extract(I tin't wait!)Thank Y'all very much for a yummy and versatile frosting, Jean!
05/26/2012
3 stars for taste, v for piping so we'll boilerplate it out to iv. This stuff really pipes well!
11/05/2010
This was my first experience using shortening in a frosting recipe, and I loved information technology. I did utilize 1/2 shortening and i/2 butter because I wanted some butter flavor in the frosting. Information technology came out the perfect piping consistency, and went perfectly on the white almond nuptials cake recipe from this site.
04/02/2011
LOVE this frosting!! Very uncomplicated to brand and my family LOVED it. I have tried bunches of frosting recipes and this is one of the all-time!
01/16/2008
This was delicious and wonderfully effective for my initiation into cake decorating. I substituted butter for the shortening because that is what I had bachelor. Information technology was very flossy. The downside was that as it warms, it becomes less able to go along its shape. Next time I will apply half shortening/ half butter. I but kept all but a small portion refrigerated until I needed to use information technology... problem solved. I loved the texture and flavor. I will absolutely use this once more. Thank you then much!
eleven/12/2010
So yummy!!!!!
10/29/2007
I have never liked any of the fronstings I've made but even I didn't mess this ane up and it turned out great! Information technology was merely the right consistency and for once I'm not embarrassed to take the cupcakes I've fabricated to a party!!
05/29/2006
I use this frosting all the time for decorating cakes. It's perfect every fourth dimension!
04/02/2011
Wow! Peachy decorator frosting. The simply modify that I made was 1/2 tea almond and one tea butter flavour. I didn't realize that my almond bottle was about empty and I wanted to keep the frosting white, I did and the taste is wonderful. Cheers!
06/08/2010
Wow, this recipe was incredible. I will continue to apply this. The merely matter I did differently was I used butter flavored shortening instead of regular shortening. The came together well and equally quick and easy.
03/05/2012
By far the best frosting! Perfect for decorating & frosting vanilla cake. I cut the almond flavor to suit my gustatory modality, but otherwise - information technology'south perfect in my book!
10/02/2009
I needed a decorator frosting to edge a block I was making and this recipe fit the bill. Information technology was fantabulous in season & texture.
03/19/2001
This is probably the easiest, tastiest recipe I have establish for this type of frosting. I made information technology for a baby shower cake, and information technology came out perfect. Piped beautifully also, without even thinning it down (it had be refrigerated).
x/28/2010
Information technology TURNED OUT VERY GOOD, EVEN THE KIDS LIKED It, I USED Information technology FOR CUPCAKES FOR MY DAUGHTERS FIRST GRADE CLASS
06/16/2009
This is the perfect frosting for decorating!! I'one thousand not crazy almost almond, so I used clear butter and vanilla extracts to go along the frosting white, and requite it a buttercream taste. My hubby, who hates frosting, even liked it.
10/28/2008
this was the 2d fourth dimension that i had attemped to make a frosting that wasnt the wilton recipe for my cake. it came out excelent. i also took some to class to make the roses for my cake and they came out better than the wilton icing roses. this recipe is deffinately a keeper!
03/03/2013
I am not a cake decorator, simply but wanted to try hand at making "furry" cupcakes using a Wiltons grass tip. I was very happy with this, and it made for a terrific first try. Information technology was very easy to handle, and like shooting fish in a barrel to thin and thicken. its a perfect white and took the blue color well. Cheers!
09/16/2005
This is my husbands all time favorite frosting. I arrive atleast one a week!!
03/14/2010
Wonderful frosting. I substited water for the milk and substitued i/4 part butter for the shortening just to add flavor.
ten/02/2009
Perhaps I did something wrong, I used butter flavored shortening and the taste was overwhelming then I added more carbohydrate and milk, which changes the recipe completely, possibly I would try again, I don't know.
01/22/2011
This frosting was very good for decorating, but be sure to utilize white shortening, otherwise it will turn out yellowish.
05/xi/2009
This is the all-time frosting I have ever made so far. It is really good. And it holds its shape very well when decorating. It is simply right to frost cakes and cupcakes. Anybody whom I take made a cake for tells me that beloved it and want me to brand then more than cakes. Well I promise if you stumble upon this recipe you lot will attempt it yourself. Savor.
02/xviii/2009
This is EXCELLENT frosting for decorating! Will employ this often, Thanks!
05/xvi/2010
My married man, who isn't a sweets person, said this was the all-time icing always. Even so, I followed anybody'south advice and used 1/2c butter and 1/2c shortening, hence the iv-star review. I also used coconut milk instead of regular milk. The almond taste was great and my hubby took some to piece of work, which disappeared in 20 minutes...and his role is all men. And so, I say if MEN swallow these things, and then they're GOOD!
08/25/2010
Thank you for such an easy frosting recipe. Mine turned out low-cal and fluffy and perfect for my ii-year sometime to help decorate cupcakes. We will definitely utilize this ane again!
04/11/2000
This is a very good frosting and very piece of cake to make and adjust to your needs.
02/01/2004
This was a great starting point for frosting! I didn't add the almond and added lemon excerpt instead, and tinted information technology with food coloring. Information technology came out pretty well. Thanks for this quick and easy recipe, I volition probably employ it once more.
04/09/2008
I don't like shortening, and so I used butter instead. It turned out cracking, the flavor was good and it was piece of cake to work with. Information technology was yellow to begin with, simply I continued beating it in the mixer, and it ended up looking off-white. It was pretty close. I was going to color it anyway, and then information technology didn't thing. Even every bit the plain color, confronting my chocolate frosting it looked white! I volition definitely be using this recipe in the future!
05/28/2005
The consistency was very practiced for decorating. The flavor was okay. Next time I might utilise butter instead of shortening and a different flavoring. But this is a cracking bones recipe.
02/23/2009
unbelievable! perfect and stores great in the fridge. the almond does it.
05/29/2017
Excellent receipe.Used pure vanilla extract instead of Almond and was superb! Glad I constitute this receipe. My go to icing receipe .
03/21/2013
I use clear vanilla excerpt instead of almond, add a tin of vanilla frosting from the store and two more than tbs of milk. Now that is the perfect frosting!!!
09/07/2015
I use h2o rather than milk as milk did non mix well with shortening.
06/xviii/2009
This is exactly what I was looking for. I used it for my daughters 4th altogether cake. Having no experience at cake decorating, I establish this frosting very user friendly and the cake turned out beautifully. Cheers!
09/23/2014
Standard Frosting! I did use all Butter only because I didnt need a pure white icing plus i prefer the flavor over using Shortening! Very creamy and fluffy!! Perfect for the Birthday cake I made!!!
06/28/2010
Loved this recipe. Super simple! I actually appreciated the communication to "separate decorating role and then thin the overall cover" advice. will use from now on... I just used a cup of butter instead of shortening, I call back it tastes meliorate than with shortening.
05/eighteen/2009
This frosting was so much easier than any decorator frosting I have used and it turned out perfect! I didn't change a thing in it every bit I used it with star and writing tips equally well equally basic cake-roofing. Thanks!
02/15/2013
Perfect with the white almond nuptials block recipe!!!!
06/11/2020
I liked this recipe. I too added half cup butter shortening and half cup butter plus vanilla instead of almond. I used my Kitchen Aid wisk attachment to whip. I had made eight small cake loaves and this was just plenty to cover them. I volition make once again.
01/08/2013
Easy to brand and it tasted dandy. It makes a lot of frosting, though, and then I concluded up throwing a lot of it away.
12/23/2016
I have used this in the past and accept had success and failure with it. I used an off brand shortening and the coloring didn't mix. For those who pure white and want to utilize butter you can always make your own butter from whipping foam. Butter is non supposed to be yellow. Just pour it in a nutrient processor and let information technology go until information technology stoops changing in consistency. Then table salt to taste. You will merely get about one/3 to i/ii cup butter out of a qt. of whipping foam. Doing information technology this mode isn't inexpensive but if pure white is important and all shortening or goat milk doesn't sound appealing this is another option. Maybe you can get white butter in a store or shop I accept seen it. Good luck.
11/03/2009
This was the best frosting I've had. I'm never buying the stuff from the store again. I used butter instead of shortning.
09/03/2009
This frosting is rich & almondy. Past using a little less milk than called for, I was able to get a thicker frosting that held upwards really well for making flowers.
12/fourteen/2014
Perfect. Used on carbohydrate cookies (Christmas cookies) perfect for what I needed.
07/05/2014
I added a picayune more than almond extract than said, and it tasted amazing.
08/01/2008
neat season, groovy presentation, got rave reviews from friends and family at my son's birthday! I used the home-made vanilla excerpt I had on hand and it was succulent! Everyone was devouring the frosting!
01/21/2019
I subbed a half teaspoon of almond extract with vanilla and added juice squeezed from one modest lemon wedge. I got lots of complements on the toast of this icing! Information technology held its shape well! I had to make information technology dairy and soy free, so I used nutival palm oil shortening and walnut milk in the recipe. I volition definitely use this recipe once more!
10/24/2015
I did not similar the fashion this tastes.
eleven/18/2014
Thanks to this recipe my cupcakes were yummy....loved it
01/17/2014
This is a fantastic frosting!! I used this recipe for the cupcakes that I made for my 2 year old daughters birthday office. I substituded vanilla extract (chocolate-brown) and ane/2 cup of butter ane/ii shortening and it came out PERFECT!! I used brown vanilla extract because I colored the frosting with food coloring anyway and my daughter is allergic to almonds. I HIGHLY recommend this recipe if you need to decorate your cakes.
03/24/2016
I loved it! I used Crisco & Vanilla extract and it was white, stiff, and favorable.
03/25/2014
As far every bit texture, this icing was PERFECT for piping. The taste...not so much. I followed the recipe exactly and I could barely become through eating the kickoff cupcake. You can feel the shortening grease on your lips and maybe it'due south just me but it really grossed me out. Besides, information technology'southward besides sugary. I realize I could've tweaked it but I wanted to encounter how it turned out past post-obit it.
05/08/2017
This decorators icing is amazing and piece of cake to work with. I have made it for every cake I accept made since before last Christmas. Not bad for cupcakes, hymeneals cakes, birthday cakes and decorating cookies.
